What is LATISSE® and how does it work?

LATISSE® utilizes the same active ingredient as an eyedrop called Lumigan which is used to treat ocular hypertension.  The discovery of LATISSE® occured almost by accident when patients using this medication discovered that their eyelashes were growing unexpectedly.   Upon this discovery, Allergan Inc., the makers of Lumigan, conducted 4 months of clinical studies on 278 patients to see if the activie ingredient, bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%, could be safely and effectively used strictly for eyelash growth.

During clinical trials, 78% of patients using LATISSE® saw longer, fuller, and darker eyelashes by week 16.  Soon after, the FDA approved the treatment for eyelash growth ... and LATISSE® was born.

LATISSE® Recommended Usage

LATISSE® should be used every night along the upper eyelid, directly to the lashes. You'll usually start to see results in about 4 to 8 weeks, with optimal results achieved after 16 weeks.

Do not apply in your eye on to your lower eyelid and only use the sterile applicators that come with the kit.  After you use one of the applicators, discard it and grab another the following night.  Also, if you accidentally miss a day, don't try to catch up with a double treatment the next day.  Using it twice a day will not increase the growth of your lashes more than using it once a day.

If you happen to get LATISSE® in your eye, don't worry, it is not expected to cause harm.  There's no need to rinse your eye.

If you wear contact lenses, make sure you remove them before applying LATISSE®.  They can be reinserted 15 minutes after an application.

And finally ... you can store your LATISSE® at room temperature.

Possible LATISSE® side effects

The main side effects that have shown up include irritation and red eyes (4% of patients) and possible darkening of the eyelid skin although this is less common.
