How We Do A Brow Wax

For brow waxing, we use a hard wax that grabs the hairs while only slightly holding to the skin, providing a more comfortable treatment with less irritation.  Our brow shaping service is particularly popular if it's been a while since your last wax, and you'd like your eyebrows to be more defined and attractive while complementing the contours of your face.

UPDATE - We've recently started offering an alternative waxing service called "NuFree" that's getting rave reviews from our customers.  NuFree is not a wax ... it's a soy based, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial wax alternative that's as comfortable as a hard wax, but is able to hold the hair more tightly and remove it from the root.  This means that hairs return more slowly than with a hard wax, and it also helps prevents ingrown hairs.

So if you typically get waxed every 4 weeks ... after getting a NuFree wax ... some of our clients report that they only need to get a wax every five to six weeks.

You can choose if you want a hard wax or a NuFree wax during your appointment.

The liquid facelift, also known as the "liquid lift" has become a popular procedure at Skin RN in the past few years for people who prefer a non-surgical option for looking younger.  One of the features of the liquid facelift that appeals to many clients is the instant results that can be achieved.

What is a liquid facelift?

A liquid facelift uses a combination of Botox and Juvederm to minimize fine lines and wrinkles on the face, and lift the skin around the eyes, mouth, and cheeks.

How does a liquid facelift compare to a traditional facelift?

There are two main differences.  First, the liquid lift doesn't require any cutting or general anastesia.  So there's no bleeding, or chance of infection like with the traditional facelift.  Also, the results aren't permanent. A liquid lift will give your appearance an immediate improvement that will last about 6 months as the effects of the Botox and Juvederm go away.

Most of our customers who are interested in a liquid lift are usually people who feel that surgery is too dangerous, or are concerned at a permanent facelift could look unnatural ... and would prefer to get a liquid lift to see whether or not that want to do something more permanent at a later time.

The liquid lift is perfect for someone who simply can't take a week or more away from work to undergo a surgical procedure.

The pricing for a liquid facelift is based upon units of Botox and syringes of Juvederm that will be required to perform the procedure.  Since everyone's needs are a little different, we offer per unit pricing for these two different things.  If you come in for a free consultation, we'll be able to give you a pretty good idea of how much Botox and Juvederm you'll need for optimal results.

What is a bikini wax?

A bikini wax is the removal of all hair from the pelvic area surrounding a typical bikini swimsuit.

A comfortable bikini wax does exist ...

We use a combination of strip wax and hard wax in all of our waxing services.  Strip wax is a gooey, sticky wax that is applied to the treatment area and strip of cloth is laid over it.  With a slight bit of pressure, the wax adheres to the cloth and the underlying hairs, and a waxing professional can quickly pull the cloth and the hair underneath away leaving smooth, hairless, skin.  This is typically used for larger areas with lots of hair to quickly perform a treatment.

Hard wax is used for more sensitive areas of the skin.  For a hard wax to be effective, it is heated to melting point and applied with a wooden tongue depressor. This form of wax holds very well to hair, but tends to holds less to the actual skin underneath.  This allows the waxing professional to more comfortably treat smaller, more sensitive areas.

Depending on your waxing needs, we will use either a hard wax or a strip wax ... or a combination of the two.  If you've found that a bikini wax has been very uncomfortable in the past, our waxing specialists will make sure to choose the kind of wax that will provide the best results with the least discomfort.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are the visible surface manifestations of an underlying condition known as venous insufficiency and may be isolated or associated with 'feeder' veins. They are the result of broken capillaries that are connected to the body's vein system.  Spider veins can be identified by clusters of red or purple veins commonly found on the thighs, behind the knees, and on the calves, ankles, and face.  They may show up at any time starting from your teenage years or later on in life.

Spider veins are often confused with varicose veins, although these two conditions are very different.  Spider veins are usually the sign of a problem in the shallow venous system. They are small, easy to treat, and don't offer much of a threat to your personal health.  Vericose veins are much more dangerous and can lead to circulatory problems.

What Causes Spider Veins?

What Is JUVÉDERM®?

Skin RN Aesthetics offers laser skin resurfacing with FDA approved fractional CO2 lasers for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, minimizing sun spots, Melasma, and acne scars, and improving the overall texture and look of your skin.

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

There are two main kinds of skin resurfacing lasers on the market today.  Fully ablative and fractional.  You may have heard of fully ablative lasers because they've been around for a while.  Also called CO2 lasers, these are used to completely "burn off" the top layer of your skin.  While they can get good results, common side effects include excessive oozing, extreme pain, and several weeks of hiding away from the world while your skin starts to grow back.

Fractional Skin Resurfacing is a newer technology that makes thousands of tiny perforations in the surface of your skin, extending down into the dermis to allow new skin form in its place.  Unlike a fully ablative laser, a fractional laser leaves the skin around the microscopic holes in tact, resulting in a safer procedure, shorter downtime, and less pain.

At Skin RN, we utilize The SmartXide DOT (Dermal Optical Thermolysis).  This laser was specifically designed to go one step further than traditional fractional lasers by not only resurfacing the skin, but also stimulating collagen to tighten the skin.  That's why it's works so well at reducing or eliminating wrinkles, skin discoloration, sun spots, and acne scars.  By simultaneously resurfacing and stimulating collagen growth, the skin's appearance looks much younger with a single treatment.

Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Hurt?

90% of patients rate the pain as a 2 or 3 on a 10 point scale.  The most common way patients described it is "like an intense sunburn."  To minimize the pain our medical director can prescribe anti-anxiety and anti-pain medications after a brief consultation.  We also apply numbing cream before the procedure and use an icy blast of air to the treatment area during the procedure (it's like a high powered, handheld air conditioner that attaches to the laser).  Finally, after the treatment, we provide you with ice packs and an after-care kit with skin creams and moisturizers to speed up the healing process and make sure you get the best possible results.

What is a Brazilian wax?

A full Brazilian wax involves the removal of all hair in the pelvic area, front and back. This is often confused with a bikini wax which only involves removing any hair that extends past a typical bikini bathing suit.  During a Brazilian, you can choose to leave some hair on the front, usually in the shape of a strip or triangle.

We use two kinds of wax to perform a Brazilian.  Strip wax and hard wax.  Strip wax is used on larger areas while hard wax is used on more sensitive areas.  We combine both of these types of wax to get the best results with the least discomfort.

All waxing sessions are performed in a private treatment room to ensure your comfort and discretion.

How To Prepare For A Brazilian Wax

To get the best possible results from your Brazilian Wax, the hair needs to be about a 1/4 inch in length.  So if you've been shaving, you should let the hair grow for about two weeks before your appointment. If the hair is significantly longer than 1/4 inch, then our waxing professional will need to trim the hair before applying any wax (which costs an additional $15).

I know you probably don't want to read all of this, but for the sake of full disclosure, here's the potential dangers and side effects of a BOTOX® treatment.  We will discuss this fully in your consultation.

BOTOX® and BOTOX® Cosmetic may cause serious side effects that can be life threatening. Call your doctor or get medical help right away if you have any of these problems after treatment with BOTOX® or BOTOX® Cosmetic:

• Problems swallowing, speaking, or breathing. These problems can happen hours to weeks after an injection of BOTOX® or BOTOX® Cosmetic usually because the muscles that you use to breathe and swallow can become weak after the injection. Death can happen as a complication if you have severe problems with swallowing or breathing after treatment with BOTOX® or BOTOX® Cosmetic.
• People with certain breathing problems may need to use muscles in their neck to help them breathe. These patients may be at greater risk for serious breathing problems with BOTOX® or BOTOX® Cosmetic.
• Swallowing problems may last for several months. People who cannot swallow well may need a feeding tube to receive food and water. If swallowing problems are severe, food or liquids may go into your lungs. People who already have swallowing or breathing problems before receiving BOTOX® or BOTOX® Cosmetic have the highest risk of getting these problems.
• Spread of toxin effects. In some cases, the effect of botulinum toxin may affect areas of the body away from the injection site and cause symptoms of a serious condition called botulism.

The symptoms of botulism include:

• loss of strength and muscle weakness all over the body
• double vision
• blurred vision and drooping eyelids
• hoarseness or change or loss of voice (dysphonia)
• trouble saying words clearly (dysarthria)
• loss of bladder control
• trouble breathing
• trouble swallowing

These symptoms can happen hours to weeks after you receive an injection of BOTOX® or BOTOX® Cosmetic.

These problems could make it unsafe for you to drive a car or do other dangerous activities.

There has not been a confirmed serious case of spread of toxin effect away from the injection site when BOTOX® has been used at the recommended dose to treat severe underarm sweating, blepharospasm, or strabismus, or when BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used at the recommended dose to treat frown lines.

What is MicroAblation?

MicroAblation is a unique medical facial treatment that combines several popular facial procedures in order to get a more dramatic result than a traditional facial.  However, a MicroAblation goes one step further by stimulating collagen production by combining bi-polar radio frequency with saline solution.

How MicroAblation Works

During your treatment, the aesthetician glides an electrode wand tip over the skin that is charged with radio frequency. Also connected to the wand tip is IV tubing which supplies sterile normal saline solution to the electrode.  When the saline solution and the electrode come in contact, a "plasma field" is created.  The result is a gaseous field that is able to penetrate to the dermis (the deeper second layer of skin) causing the skin cells to separate on a molecular level.

The "micro-separation" that occurs at this moment causes your skin cells to perceive a minor injury, even though your skin won't look or feel injured.  But once your skin cells perceive this separation as an injury, they are stimulated to make collagen in order to "heal" the injury.

A back treatment is a facial treatment for your back.  That may sound a little weird, but it's the perfect treatment before a big event if you plan on wearing a dress with an open back.  A back facial utilizes many of the same techniques used in skin treatments for the face, but it's customized to address your specific skin care needs on your back. This facial can treat clogged pores, dehydration, back acne, hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and more. Many times, we add a microdermabrasion or chemical peel to your treatment for best results.

Extractions, 15 minutes, - $30

An  extraction is the removal of blackheads or whiteheads.  Blackheads are medically known as an open comedone, where the pore/hair follicle gets clogged with an excess amount of oil, dirt, skin cells or bacteria.  Whiteheads, also known as a closed comedone are similar to blackheads where the pores are filled with a combination of the same materials (oil, dirt, etc.), however a closed comedone lacks an opening to the skins surface that allows oxygen to get in.  Extractions can be performed on their own if they are ready to be removed, but depending on how deep they are, sometimes best results are achieved when performed during a facial after the skin has been thoroughly cleansed and exfoliated to soften up the materials that are clogging the pores.

What Is Cellulite?

Cellulite, also known as "cottage cheese" or "orange peel" is estimated to affect 80% of all women over the age of 20, regardless of their weight.  It generally appears on the buttocks, hips, and thighs.

Although cellulite has been widely studied in clinical circles, the real cause is not fully understood, although several theories currently exist.  The most popular of them include hormones, genetics, diet, and even clothing.

How To Eliminate Cellulite

A typical Synergie treatment program consists of bi-weekly sessions which last about 45 minutes, followed by monthly maintenance visits after your initial results are achieved.  In addition, we recommend that you maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine to prevent additional fat from turning into cellulite as you receive your treatments.

How To Determine Your Skin Type For Laser Hair Removal

The reason it's important to understand your skin type is because different lasers are used to treat different skin types.  Before you choose to get laser hair removal, it's important to determine if your treatment provider is using a device that will work effectively for your skin type.  Six different skin types are distinguished using the Fitzpatrick Scale, also known as the Fitzpatrick skin typing test. At Skin RN, we use multiple FDA approved devices to effectively treat all six skin types.

• Level 1: Light, very fair, or "white." Tends to have red or blond hair, and freckles. You rarely tan and often burn in the sun
  
  
• Level 2 - Light, fair, or light-skinned European.  Tends to have light colored or red hair. Tanning can be a challenge.
  
  
• Level 3 - Beige, light-intermediate, or dark-skinned European. Any hair or eye color.  Rarely burns, gradually tans.
  
  
• Level 4 - Beige with a brown tint, also known as "Mediterranean" or "olive skin." Dark brown to black hair and dark eyes.  Rarely burns and easily tans.
  
  
• Level 5 - Brown, dark brown, or hispanic.  Black hair and brown or hazel eyes.  Tans every easily.
  
  
• Level 6 - Very dark, or "black."  Black hair with dark brown eyes with minor variations.  Never burns in the sun, or tans very easily.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

You may have noticed that pricing for laser hair removal is pretty broad.  That's because of the wide variety of devices available for performing it. We currently utilize two different FDA approved, medical grade laser hair removal devices.  Both of these are considered "top of the line" equipment and give us the ability to treat all six skin types.

An important consideration before getting laser hair removal is the kind of equipment used for your treatment.  The FDA has recently reported that "so many devices have entered the laser hair removal market in recent years that they can no longer keep up with and approve every device available." And manufacturers have popped up everywhere claiming that their single laser can treat all 6 skin types.

But here's the catch ... these devices may very well treat all 6 types, but in most cases, they will only EFFECTIVELY treat one or two types, while only removing a fraction of the hair on the other 4 types.

Inferior devices are popping up all the time and they cost a fraction of what a medical grade device costs.  So someone could buy one of these inferior devices today, take your money, and disappear (I just heard a story about a woman in Nashville who bought a $1,500 treatment package and the business closed before she ever received her first treatment).

Skin RN Aesthetics offers laser tattoo removal with the state-of-the-art MedLite® laser.  Laser technology has come a long way in the past few years, so if you're thinking of getting tattoo removal, here's a few things you may want to consider.

How Does Tattoo Removal Work?

The device that we use can treat a variety of inks and colors using four different wavelengths of PhotoAcoustic energy that penetrates the surface of the skin and shatters the ink into microscopic particles.  These harmless particles are then absorbed into the lymph system and passed out of the body as waste.  The easiest tattoos to remove are black because we can use a single wavelength to treat the entire area.  Colorful tattoos take a little more time but they can also be removed with this laser.

It Hurt When It Went On ... Will It Hurt When It Comes Off?

We won't sugar coat it here ... yes, it hurts.  Most patients say that the feeling is similar to actually getting the tattoo.  Every time the laser pulses, it will feel like a rubber band snapping on your skin followed by a feeling of warmth.

We've been doing tattoo removal since 2003 and if there were a more effective and less painful way to get it done, we'd do it.  To date we've tried different lasers, balms, and even a little tattoo voodoo :-) but have never found a more effective treatment.
