Restylane® Vs. JUVEDERM®

Are you considering Restylane®? Here’s an inside look at this popular dermal filler compared to JUVEDERM®.  Before you make an appointment for Restylane® injections, you may want to consider this alternative.

Injectable fillers have steadily grown in popularity over the last several years, and that popularity has attracted a variety of manufacturers to introduce their own brand of dermal filler using their own special recipe.  One of the first of these with broad appeal was Restylane, which was first introduced in 1996, and marketed in the United States by the Medicus Pharmaceutical Corporation.  

JUVEDERM®, manufactured and marketed by the Allergan Corporation, was released in 2006 after the FDA approved its safety and effectiveness in three separate clinical trials.

So let’s compare the two.

From the surface, these products appear to be nearly identical.  Both Restylane® and JUVEDERM® are made of hyaluronic acid, derived from streptococcus bacteria, and can safely be injected into the nasolabial folds, lips, around the mouth, cheeks, etc.  Depending on the injection site, they last between 3 to 12 months, requiring only a single treatment, and the cost is about the same.

Okay … so this article seems pretty pointless … thanks for nothing.

But wait!

The big difference between Restylane® and JUVEDERM® is the “silky” texture of JUVEDERM®. Here’s what I mean.  The chemical compound of Restylane® appears to be more “grainy” than JUVEDERM® … both in the vial and under the skin.

The difference is subtle, but up close, you can actually see it.  An area treated with JUVEDERM®  looks smoother … more natural.  Not only that, but patients have been reporting for years that JUVEDERM® injections are more comfortable than Restylane®.  We believe that this is due to the smooth texture of JUVEDERM® as it passes from the needle into the skin.  And the newly introduced JUVEDERM XC®, which is infused with lidocaine, provides an even more comfortable experience than ever.

So there you have it. 

While both of these products are similar in price and in their chemical structure, JUVEDERM® has shown better results and greater comfort for patients.
